Karlsen House is a halfway house for runaways, children
between foster homes, and various kids in trouble. It is funded by the
First Lutheran Church of Sanctuary. The house itself is a large Colonial
and was donated by Martha Karlsen, a member of the church, upon her death.
Karlsen was well known for her love and work with children, and the creation
of the halfway house seemed a fitting tribute to her.
The K-House, as it is known, incuded some extra property
to one side that was transformed into a parking lot/basketball court. The
house itself has two stories. The boys' rooms are on the second floor,
and the girls' rooms are on the first floor. All of the residents have
duties related to the maintenance and daily chores around the house.
Current Residents:
Patricia Dare- Fresh out of seminary, Pastor Dare is
in charge of all youth activities at First Lutheran. In addition, she lives
at and handles the day to day operations of Karlsen House. She's 27 with
thick, long, black, curly hair and alabaster skin. She abhors make-up and
actually looks better without it. She's both caring and stubborn; she joined
the seminary boxing team because she was told a woman *couldn't* do it.
Overall, she's perfect for overseeing the kids at K-House.
Kathy- Kathy has never given a last name, or any information
regarding her past before showing up at the door of Karlsen House. To all
appearances, she's an above average 16 year old. She's blond, blue-eyed,
looks like your stereotypical high school cheerleader, and has shown high
intelligence. She is, however, completely deaf and can only communicate
by sign, lip-reading, and written notes. There is a dry-erase board in
the front hall of the K-House that she uses for visitors and when she doesn't
have an interpreter.
Sarah Jackson- Sarah is the wild one of the bunch. She's
a leather, goth party girl with an attitude. Visually, she's the opposite
of Kathy; short, black-dyed hair and pale skin. Normally, wearing black
lipstick, black clothes, etc. Sarah was bounced from foster home to foster
home until First Lutheran agreed to keep her at K-House until her 18th
birthday. It's less than a year away, and she lets everyone know. Sarah
talks about only being out for number one, but she was the first one to
learn sign after Kathy arrived. She also has a strong interest in the occult;
she claims it's for the whole goth atmosphere. In reality, sometimes things
happen to help her out when she's in serious trouble, and she wants to
figure out why.
E.J. (Edward James) Cooley- E.J.'s mother was in her
late 40's when she had him, which was probably the cause of his Down's
Syndrome. She was a lifelong member of First Lutheran, and upon discovering
that she had cancer and not long to live, she asked that E.J. be allowed
to stay at Karlsen House. She wanted him to grow up with people that he
knew and that she trusted to care for him. The arrangements were made.
E.J. has a pure heart, there's no other way to describe him. He either
has a smile or a look of wonder on his face. He absolutely loves nature
in all its forms. Wild Discovery on the Discovery Channel is his favorite
thing. His Guardian Angel is from the top ranks.
Martin "Hammer" Dula- Hammer, as he prefers
to be called, is a runaway. He's obviously from the streets of some large
city, but he's never said where. He's tough, cool, and unstoppable. Well,
at least, he thinks so. He's a handsome, African-American 15-17 year old.
He's also never given a specific age. He's normally Sarah's partner in
crime for more rebellious activities.
Alibaster Jones- 16, she was working the streets from
the age of 12 on. It was actually Martin who upon meeting her worked to
get her into K-House. She puts on a much more mature attitude than most
kids her age. Underneath, she'd like a room that's pink, frilly, with stuffed
animal's galore, all the dolls she could fit in it, in essence, everything
she's never had. She's 5'7", on the thin side. She wears a size 5.
She has one blue eye, one green eye. Very fairskinned. Her hair is white
blonde, cut in a long page with bangs. Like most of the kids when they
are pulled off the street, she's wary of adults. She's only been there
a few months.
