         The Old Port and Exchange Portland's Old Port District has been restored to 19th century splendor, with cobbled streets and beautiful Victorian brick buildings housing an eclectic mix of restaurants, microbreweries, art galleries, and specialty shops.

         Promenade Point--Overlooks Casco Bay and includes a park park which features wrought-iron benches, neat flower beds bursting with roses and flora in the spring and summer months, and bicycle path.

        Promadade Point is renowned for the lovely Victorian houses, which line it’s neighborhoods. Many of these homes are bed and breakfast inns popular with tourists. Most remain single family residences, and command a high price in the current real estate market.

        Sanctuary Center. Downtown, the newly created Justice complex contains the Police Department, the Medical Examiners Office, city jail and the Sanctuary Fire Department. Also in this area is the Cumberland County Courthouse, The Sanctuary Bank, amoung others, and quite a few major corporations have office buildings in this area as well. The The Sanctuary Artistic Arts Center, the Sanctuary Museum of Art (famous for its collection of Maine-themed art by such well-known painters as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Andrew Wyeth), the Cumberland Civic Center , and the Convention Center and Civic Center (which gets major rock tours) are located here as well.

         University Woods is home to the U of M at Sanctuary. TheSchool of Parapsychology can be found here. Inexpensive restaurants, shops, and pubs line the streets, appealing to the student population. Many of the turn-of-the century houses have been turned into apartments for the students.

        Wadsworth--Longfellow Point, where Wadsworth—Longfellow Univirsity is located, boasts a small campus and the streets surrounding feature many examples of Colonial and Federal architecture. Very Upscale.

        Greater Sanctuary

          Hawk’s Inlet , once and area renouned for hiding a famous pirate, Johnathan Hawk, who was the terror of the waterways in the 1700’s is now a small fishing village, which features newer condo’s and apartment houses for the yuppie population, as well as any older homes. It has a small outdoor plaza famed for it’s expensive bookstores, exclusive clothing shops and antique stores.

        Cape Elizabeth is a small town of older homes where many older retiree’s and middle-class families live.

        Dover is the town adjoining Sanctuary to the north, and they flow right into each other; it includes several small islands connected to the mainland by bridges. On Dover Foreside, is a large island that is only a stone's throw away from the mainland and features the Dover Point Lighthouse.
